In Australia, there are around 60,000 reports of animal cruelty, abuse or neglect made every year to the RSPCA. This is a shocking amount of animals suffering, and as a society we need to do better to prevent this. Here are 8 ways that you can help prevent animal cruelty (scroll down for a simple infographic).
1. Always be a responsible pet owner
Don’t just provide your pet with the basic needs. Fulfil their needs and give them positive experiences to enhance their overall wellbeing.
2. Be an example of kindness to other pets
Why not help by fostering an abandoned pet? Unfortunately, many pets are given up to animal shelters. Foster homes can really help these poor animals recover and prepare for life in a new, forever loving home.
3. Intervene and report any animal cruelty, abuse or neglect
If you witness someone mistreating an animal, do what you can to stop them and then immediately report them to the police or authorities. However, ensure you are not putting yourself in any danger first.
4. Teach your children to respect all animals
Children learn from their parents actions and behaviours. Set a good example for them by always being respectful and genuine to animals. Teach your children how to properly treat animals with love, compassion and affection.
5. Push for stricter laws on animal protection
As a society we need to demand for stricter laws regarding animal protection and welfare. Having stronger laws and harsher penalties will help reduce the high number of animal cruelty cases.
6. Provide shelter for an animal in need
You can make a massive difference by providing a safe home for an abused or neglected animal. You can help change their lives with your support, care, and love.
7. Consider that neglect or animal abuse can be linked with domestic violence
Research from Faunalytics, shows that animal abuse is often closely linked with domestic abuse. By reporting an animal abuser you may also be helping a family along with the animal.
8. Educate people around you of the issue
Spreading awareness goes a long way. You can teach people how to help prevent animal cruelty by sharing this post and the infographic below with your family and friends on social media.
